Breast augmentation is one of the most popular Plastic Surgery procedures among women. It is designed to enhance the size of breasts and bring symmetry using breast implants or fat transfer.
Breast augmentation can also restore breast volume that has been lost due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, aging or weight loss and improve the natural breast size and shape. In addition to these, breast augmentation can also do the following:
- Improve balance between hip and breast contours
- Increase the projection and fullness of the breasts
- Enhance your self-confidence and self-image
It should however be noted that breast augmentation does not correct severely sagging breasts. If you have severely drooping breasts you may have to combine breast augmentation with a breast lift in order to achieve a fuller, lifted look of the chest contour.
How Breast Augmentation Works
During a breast augmentation procedure, a breast implant or fat from another part of your body is inserted behind each of your breasts. The implants either sit behind the natural breast tissue (subglandular/submammary placement) or under the pectoral muscle (submuscular placement). This can increase the breast size by a cup or more depending on your goals.
The breast implant material boosts the size of your breasts by a cup or more and provides shape to the breast areas that previously felt empty.
Implants are soft, flexible shells that are either filled with saline or silicone
Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation
A good candidate for breast augmentation should fit the following criteria:
- Be physically and mentally healthy
- Be at a stable weight
- Have realistic expectations about the procedure
- Have fully developed breasts
- Be dissatisfied with the loss of volume and shape of the breasts
- Have asymmetrical breasts
- One or both of the breasts have an elongated shape or failed to develop normally
Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon for Breast Augmentation
A successful breast augmentation procedure entirely depends on the right breast augmentation surgeon in Dubai. The surgeon you are going to choose should be a board-certified plastic surgeon, should have ample experience in breast surgeries, and should be associated with one of the best aesthetic surgery clinics in Dubai. The top characteristics of a good plastic surgeon include;
- He/she should have good reviews about previous work from the previous candidates.
- He/she should be able to show you his previous work through photographs or other data
- He/she prioritizes patient care and safety
- He/she has a keen artistic eye and aesthetic sense
Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation surgery is usually done as an outpatient procedure under general anaesthesia. There are three types of incisions that your Plastic Surgeon can use during the breast augmentation procedure and they include:
- Axillary – in the armpit
- Inframammary fold – the fold under the breast
- Peri–areola – along the edge of the areola
The incisions vary on the degree of enlargement desired, the type of breast implant being used, your unique anatomy and the preference of the patient and surgeon.
Your plastic surgeon will decide which incision type will best suit you depending on your desired outcome. All the three incisions are made in inconspicuous areas so as to minimize visible scarring.
The Plastic Surgeon will create a pocket by separating the chest muscle and tissue from the breast tissue. The implants are then placed inside the pockets and centered inside the breasts.
Silicone implants come when they are already filled, while saline implants are filled with a sterile solution once the shell has been put in place.
Once the implants are placed successfully, the incisions are closed with stitches and bandaged with surgical tape and surgical glue to secure them.
Recovery and Results
Following your breast augmentation surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in gauze dressings and a support bra or elastic bandage to help minimize swelling and support the breasts during the recovery period.
You will be given specific post-op instructions by your Plastic Surgeon to follow during your recovery at home. Following these instructions well is important as it plays a role in determining the outcome of the procedure.
In some cases, a drainage tube may be temporarily placed to collect fluid and blood that may drain from the treatment area.
You will experience swelling, bruising and discomfort but pain medication and antibiotics will be prescribed for you to help with the recovery. Depending on your type of work, you can resume within a week. Although, if your job is more physical, you may take a longer time off to heal. This is because you’ll need to avoid strenuous activities for a minimum of 2 weeks or until cleared by your plastic surgeon.
The results are immediate, though they are usually obscured by the swelling. The final result will be visible once the swelling has gone down.
Although the results of breast implants are long-lasting, follow-up surgeries may be needed in the future to replace the implants if the need arises.
NOTE: All results vary from one patient to the next

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that increases the size and volume of the breasts in addition to reshaping them. The procedure is done using breast implants placed under the breast tissue or autologous fat transfer which is harvested from other areas of the body then re-injected into the breasts to add more volume. Breast augmentation gives a woman more confidence.
Depending on the technique used, whether it’s with implants or fat transfer, the breast augmentation procedure can last anywhere from one hour to 2 hours. Breast augmentation is done under general anesthesia.
Breast augmentation can be done by anyone above the age of 21 years. Younger women, who are in their 20s and 30s do breast augmentation without the need to lift the breasts, while older women prefer to increase the size and lift the breasts at the same time.
Breast augmentation cost depends on the location of the plastic surgery clinic, the plastic surgeon, and the type of implant used. The average cost for a simple breast augmentation with implants is USD 10,000, while the cost of breast implants with fat transfer ranges between USD 12,000 and USD 15,000.
Breast augmentation with implants or fat transfer is not covered by insurance. This is because it is an elective surgical procedure (cosmetic), which means it’s not life-threatening, or the patient can lead a normal life without the procedure.
