Dr Tim Lees trained in the UK and USA and has worked in the UK National Health Service for 33 years, 22 years at consultant level. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and member of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland (VSGBI).
Within vascular surgery he has a special interest in the treatment of varicose veins, spider veins and complex venous disease including vascular malformations and leg ulceration. He has an MD with Commendation from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne for research into venous haemodynamics. He is an editor of the Phlebology journal.
He has been at the forefront of the development of new techniques in the management of venous disease and has taught internationally on venous disease and venous ultrasound. He has been secretary of the Venous Forum of the Royal Society of Medicine.
Dr Lees is committed to audit and improving clinical outcomes. He has been the Chair of the Audit and Research Committee of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland (VSGBI) and the UK national carotid endarterectomy audit with the Royal College of Physicians and VSGBI. He has also been the Chair of the international vascular audit group, Vascunet.
In addition to his venous interest Dr Lees performs all types of arterial surgery and has been the research lead for and adviser to the NHS Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme.
He has published widely in Vascular Surgery with over 120 publications and has been principle supervisor of several MD research students. He has participated in the production of international European guidelines on the management of mesenteric ischaemia.
