What is a Hernia?\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n A hernia is an external bulge in the abdomen. In which part of an organ, intestine or fatty tissue are protruded through an abdominal wall defect. There are some different types of hernias, according to their abdominal location, including:<\/span><\/p>\n Hernia Signs and Symptoms <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The bulged formed after the hernial protrusion can become painful and reproduced after coughing, being upright or lifting heavy objects.<\/span><\/p>\n Sometimes, the hernia content gets strangulated, cutting the blood flow into the trapped tissue. This condition is considered as an emergency and immediate surgery is needed.<\/span><\/p>\n The signs and symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Hernia Common Causes\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The main cause of all types of hernia is the abdominal wall weakness, either as a birth condition or acquired later in life. There are a number of risk factors including:<\/span><\/p>\n Hernia Treatment <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Usually, a hernia isn\u2019t a life-threatening condition. However, our doctor might recommend surgery if you have constant pain and discomfort.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Before surgery<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n To be clear for surgery, some medical tests may be required such as taking a blood sample.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n During surgery<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The hernia repair can be performed using two main different techniques:<\/span><\/p>\n 1. Open Hernia Repair<\/span><\/p>\n After making a small incision in your abdomen, the protruding content is putted back and the abdominal wall defect is repaired.<\/span><\/p>\n 2. Laparoscopic Hernia Repair<\/span><\/p>\n Tiny surgical devices -cameras and small instruments- are inserted into your abdomen through small incisions in order to repair the abdominal wall defect.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n After surgery\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Typically, you will be asked to start moving as soon as possible. Pain killers are indicated in case of pain or discomfort. If you have successfully evolved, discharge is possible, even the day after surgery. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Recovery period, what to expect <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Coming back to your regular activities might take about 2-3 weeks. Although, using a laparoscopic technique might reduce this time.<\/span><\/p>\n Make sure to follow all instructions given by our doctors, particularly those related to your wound hygiene.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
