An anal fissure may be small, but the pain it causes can make something as routine as going to the bathroom extremely uncomfortable. At King’s College Hospital London in Dubai, our specialist proctologists and colorectal surgeons diagnose and treat anal fissures using conservative and minimally invasive approaches, with treatment tailored to the cause, severity and duration of your symptoms.

Patients seeking anal fissure treatment in Dubai have access to specialist care at King’s College Hospital Dubai, an SRC-accredited Center of Excellence in Surgical Proctology and Endoscopy. With clinical policies and protocols set by King’s College Hospital London, founded in 1840, our team follows established British healthcare standards when treating both acute and chronic anal fissures.

An anal fissure is a small tear in the lining of the anal canal. It commonly develops after passing a hard or large stool, particularly in people experiencing constipation. However, fissures can also occur for other reasons and affect people of different ages.

An acute anal fissure may heal within a few weeks with appropriate care. When a fissure does not heal or repeatedly returns, it can become chronic and may require specialist anal fissure treatment.

One of the most recognizable symptoms is sharp pain during a bowel movement, which may continue afterward. Other symptoms can include:

Because rectal bleeding and anal pain can have several possible causes, it is important not to assume that the symptoms are simply due to a fissure. A specialist assessment can confirm the diagnosis and rule out other anorectal conditions.

Constipation and passing hard or large stools are among the most common causes of anal fissures. Other possible causes include chronic diarrhea, childbirth, and inflammatory bowel conditions such as Crohn’s disease.

Your doctor will consider the underlying cause when recommending treatment, particularly if the fissure is persistent, recurrent or appears in an unusual location.

Treatment usually starts with simple measures to help the fissure heal. If symptoms continue, your doctor may recommend additional treatment.

Step 1: Make bowel movements easier

Increasing fiber, drinking more fluids and keeping stools soft can reduce strain and help prevent further irritation.

Step 2: Relieve pain and muscle spasm

Warm sitz baths, appropriate pain relief and topical medication may help ease discomfort and relax the anal sphincter.

Step 3: Consider Botox if the fissure is not healing

Botox is sometimes used when an anal fissure is not healing as expected. The injection helps relax the muscle around the anus, easing pressure on the fissure and allowing the area to heal.

Step 4: Consider surgery for persistent fissures

For selected chronic or severe fissures, lateral internal sphincterotomy (LIS) may be recommended. The procedure reduces pressure within the anal sphincter to support healing.

The best proctologists in Dubai for anal fissure treatment are Dr. Mouhsen Al Hosein, Professor Atif Alvi, and Dr. Firas Younis.

Dr. Mouhsen Al Hosein is a Consultant General Laparoscopic Surgeon and Proctologist, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and Global Master Surgeon in Surgical Proctology.
