Spinal cysts are synovial cysts which are an uncommon cause of back pain. They form on the joints or tendons in the spine and can develop as a result of natural degeneration. \u00a0Spinal cysts are generally fluid-filled sacs which vary in size and tend to be benign meaning that they are not in themselves harmful or malignant. They can go unnoticed for years as they can go without showing any signs of discomfort or pain. However, they can grow large and show similar symptoms of spinal stenosis as well as place pressure on the sensitive nerve roots exiting the spine.<\/p>\n
Causes of Spinal Cysts<\/strong><\/p>\n When the facet joint in the spine breaks down it can produce more fluid than a healthy joint. This fluid helps the damaged joint as it provides extra lubrication and helps in easing the joint\u2019s movement. However, in response to the extra fluid, a cyst may develop as the fluid builds up and gets caught in the synovial lining of the joint.<\/p>\n The fluid in the cyst is not harmful as it is not under pressure and does not cause any issues unless it begins pushing on the spine.
