Septoplasty – Deviated Septum Surgery in Dubai

A septoplasty is a nasal surgical procedure that is performed to treat a nasal blockage.

The septum is the wall made of cartilage and bone that divides the nose into the two separate nostrils. When the septum is crooked or displaced to one side of the nose, it can result in a deviated septum causing nasal blockage. This can make it harder to breathe through the nose because the airflow is reduced, and it can also increase the development of sinus infections because of poor drainage.

Some individuals are born with a deviated septum, but it can also be caused by injury to the nose. Apart from difficulty in breathing through the nose, other symptoms of a deviated septum include facial pain and frequent nosebleeds.

Septoplasty surgery is the only treatment to fix a deviated septum. Septoplasty corrects the nasal septum by trimming, repositioning, and replacing the bone or cartilage or both of them.

Septoplasty Post-Op Instructions

Prior to the procedure, your surgeon will take your medical history, perform a physical exam, take photographs of your nose from different angles and discuss your expectations of the surgery.

You will be asked to avoid taking certain medications two weeks before and after surgery. The medications include blood thinners as they can increase the risk of bleeding during surgery, and some types of supplements. It is also important to inform your surgeon if you are allergic to any medication.

Septoplasty Procedure

Septoplasty is done under either local or general anaesthesia as an outpatient procedure and can take up to 90 minutes to complete.

During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision on either side of the nose so as to have access to the septum. He/she then lifts up the protective covering of the septum, which is the mucous membrane. The cartilage and bone are reshaped, and some portions may be removed. The deviated septum is then moved into the right place and the mucous membrane is repositioned.

In cases where the blockage is caused by enlarged turbinates, the surgeon can shrink them with radiofrequency reduction or remove a portion of the turbinate.

Stitches may be required to hold the septum and membrane in place but sometimes packing the nose with cotton is enough to keep them in position.

Recovery After Septoplasty Procedure

Following the septoplasty surgery, you may experience some degree of discomfort, but you will be prescribed painkillers for the this. You will also be asked to limit physical activities for several weeks following the surgery to control swelling and promote healing. Also keeping your head elevated when sleeping is recommended, as well as avoiding blowing the nose for several weeks as this can lead to bleeding.

The wound in the nose tends to heal fairly quickly and the breathing will improve as the swelling goes down. However, it can take up to a year to fully heal as the cartilage and other nasal tissues settle into their new shape.
