Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery
Best Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgeon

Minimally invasive bunion surgery is an operational technique used to remove bunions. Rather than using a saw, this surgery is performed using a burr to cut the bone. Incisions are made through tiny incisions in the skin of the foot.  The lack of long incisions used in traditional surgeries allows for a faster recovery with immediate weight bearing, less swelling, and ease of pain.

After cleaning the skin above the bunion area, the surgeon uses 4-5 small incisions. He/She will then shave away the excess growth on the foot and make any needed repairs. Finally, using stitches and a bandage, the specialist will close the area for recovery.

Patients’ recovery time will vary depending on the case but the average time for full recovery will be within 6 weeks, as compared to 10 weeks for the traditional methods.

CAUSES OF BUNIONS

Bunions are often caused by an inherited foot type. The bunions themselves are not inherited but certain foot types can make an individual prone to developing a bunion. Other factors which can contribute to a person developing a bunion include:

  • Foot injuries or stresses
  • Foot deformities present at birth

SYMPTOMS OF BUNIONS

Symptoms which can occur at the site of the bunion include:

  • Soreness and pain, especially over the bunion area even when wearing comfortable shoes
  • Enlargement, redness, swelling and inflammation that does not improve with medicine
  • A burning sensation or numbing
  • Intrusion onto the second toe due to deformity

If you are experiencing these symptoms, speak with your doctor at King’s College Hospital about an assessment to create a treatment plan.
