We’ve all said it before. This Movember, let’s make sure we’re looking after our health.
What is Movember all about

Men are often less likely than women to see a doctor, and many put off checkups until something feels wrong. Yet several serious conditions, including heart disease, diabetes and prostate cancer, can develop quietly with few or no early symptoms. Raising awareness helps men recognise the value of regular screening, talk more openly about their health, and catch problems early when they are easier to treat.
-
A general men’s health check typically includes blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar (HbA1c), weight and body mass index, along with kidney and liver function tests. Depending on age and risk, your doctor may also recommend a PSA blood test for prostate health, bowel cancer screening, a skin check and a discussion about mental wellbeing. Men of all ages are also encouraged to check their testicles regularly for any lumps or changes.
-
We recommend that men begin regular health checks in their 20s and 30s, focusing on blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and lifestyle. From age 40, an annual check becomes more important as the risk of heart disease and diabetes rises. Prostate screening is generally discussed from age 50, or from age 45 (sometimes earlier) for men with a family history of prostate cancer or other risk factors. Your doctor will tailor the right schedule for you.
-
A PSA (prostate specific antigen) test is a simple blood test that measures the level of a protein produced by the prostate gland. A raised PSA level can be a sign of prostate cancer, but it can also be caused by an enlarged prostate, infection or recent physical activity. That is why results are always reviewed by a doctor, who will explain what they mean and whether any further tests are needed.
-
Yes. Feeling well does not always mean everything is fine. Conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and early-stage prostate cancer often have no noticeable symptoms. Regular health checks give you a clear picture of your health, help detect issues early and allow you to make small changes before they become bigger problems.
