What is a Colonoscopy Capsule (Colon Capsule Endoscopy)?
A colonoscopy capsule is a small, swallowable camera that takes thousands of images as it travels through your large bowel. You wear a light belt and recorder under your clothes while the capsule sends pictures wirelessly. There is no tube, no air inflation and no sedation.
It is non-invasive, does not need sedation, and you can usually get on with your day. Many people find it more comfortable than a traditional colonoscopy.
A colon capsule is a good option if a standard colonoscopy was incomplete, if you are unable or unwilling to have a traditional colonoscopy, or when a less invasive first look is sensible based on your symptoms and risk. It may also be considered as an alternative to CT colonography in selected cases. Your doctor will advise what is right for you.
How does the test actually work on the day?
You attend a short appointment to fit a belt and recorder. You then swallow the capsule and go home the same day. Over about six hours, the capsule records images while you follow simple “booster” instructions to help it move along. The capsule is passed naturally, usually that evening, and you return the recorder for analysis.
Good preparation is essential for clear images. For a day or two you’ll follow a modified diet, then take a bowel-cleansing drink, with timed boosters on the day. We will give you written, step-by-step instructions and a phone contact to help you prepare. (Preparation regimens are evidence-based and typically include purgatives plus a same-day booster.)
Our specialists review the images and send a report to your referring doctor, who will discuss the findings and next steps with you. Turnaround is typically within days once the recorder is returned.
Your care is led by UK-trained gastroenterologists and endoscopy nurses experienced in advanced bowel imaging and screening. If the capsule suggests anything that needs treatment, our endoscopy team can organise the appropriate procedure promptly.
How accurate is the colon capsule?
Modern, second-generation capsules show high sensitivity for finding larger polyps in research studies, though conventional colonoscopy remains the gold standard because it allows biopsy and treatment in the same session. If your capsule test is positive, we will arrange the right next step without delay.
Are there any limits or risks I should know about?
A capsule cannot take samples or remove polyps. If it spots something important or if images are incomplete, you may still need a standard colonoscopy to confirm and treat. Very rarely, a capsule can get stuck at a narrowed area (capsule “retention”). If you are at higher risk of blockage, your team may discuss a “patency” assessment first. Avoid MRI scans until the capsule has definitely passed. We will explain symptoms to look out for and who to contact.
How do I book or ask a question?
Call our team on 800 7777 or use the appointment form on our website. Please tell us about heart devices, swallowing problems, known bowel narrowings, pregnancy, or if you are on complex medicines so we can plan safely.

It can be an option in certain settings and programmes, or when standard colonoscopy is not possible. Your doctor will advise the best test for you based on your risk and local guidelines.
Sometimes, yes. You may need one if the capsule finds a polyp or cancer, if images are unclear, or if the capsule does not reach the end of the colon before its battery runs out.
Yes. There is no sedation. Most people carry on with normal activities while wearing the belt and recorder.
It often passes the same day, but delays can happen. Our team will explain how to check and when to call us. Please avoid MRI until we have confirmed passage; we may arrange an X-ray if needed.
Please tell us about any implanted devices or pregnancy. Some programmes advise against the colon capsule in these situations, or take special precautions. We will assess your case individually.
Studies show high sensitivity for clinically important (larger) polyps, but standard colonoscopy remains the reference test because it can diagnose and treat at the same time.
