Post-prostate Cancer Rehabilitation Clinic

Prostate cancer is a disease that is common in elderly men, with more than 75% of the condition being diagnosed in men over the age of 65 years. However, recent studies indicate that the incidence has increased in younger men. However, after the successful treatment of prostate cancer, it is highly recommended to have Post-prostate Cancer Rehabilitation in order to improve your quality of life.

The prostate is a tiny gland located at the base of the bladder. It encircles the urethra’s initial section and plays a vital role during the reproductive years of life.

The Post-prostate Cancer Rehabilitation Clinic at King’s is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of experts with years of experience in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of prostate cancer.

Once an individual has completed cancer treatment including prostatectomy, radiation, and/or chemotherapy, there are therapies performed by a urinary function physical therapist in conjunction with the Urologist, which have been proven to improve urinary function and quality of life.

While at the clinic, the patient undergoes a detailed assessment in order to have a personalised plan of care established, which consists of exercises and education to restore the patient’s level of function.

How the Rehabilitation Program Helps in Recovery

The entire process of prostate cancer and treatment can result in a number of issues. The most common include erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. During your first appointment at the Post-prostate Cancer Rehabilitation Clinic, the physical therapist will use the patient’s assessment findings by the Urologist to come up with a personalised plan of care consisting of education on a healthy bladder and bowel habits, pelvic floor muscle function, and behavioural strategies to help manage the patient’s symptoms.

The therapist will as well guide the patient through an exercise program to address the musculoskeletal deficits such as strength, coordination, and endurance.

What to Expect During the The Post-prostate Cancer Rehabilitation Program

The patient’s plan of care begins with an initial evaluation in which the specialists discuss the patient’s symptoms and concerns. The total pelvic health rehabilitation evaluation includes a comprehensive history and physical examination. Examination of the pelvic girdle and pelvic floor muscles may include a direct rectal assessment depending on the patient’s symptoms. The examination of the pelvic floor muscles is to determine the ability of the patient’s muscles to function.

The assessment will provide insight on whether or not the patient’s muscles can contract and relax normally, if there’s adequate strength and endurance, and if there are painful areas of increased muscle tension. The findings allow for the specialists to provide proper treatment and high personalised care at the Post-prostate Cancer Rehabilitation Clinic.

Following the patient’s initial assessment, a plan of care will be established, and the specialists will work with him to establish his treatment goals including a timeline for achievement of the said goals. The patient’s plan of care will therefore be reviewed by the Urologist before the Post-prostate Cancer Rehabilitation commences.
