What are the signs of liver cancer?
Most of the primary liver cancers do not cause any significant problem in the beginning and hence person suffering from liver cancer do not consult a doctor. By the time obvious signs appear cancer has already advanced and then curative treatment is not possible. It is important to note early warning signs and should immediately report to the doctor-
- Loss of appetite
- Unplanned loss of weight
- Weakness and fatigue
- Change in colour of urine – dark urine
- Appearance of jaundice – yellow tinge in the eyes
Can liver cancer be cured?
Primary liver cancer which starts from the liver itself, usually presents at a stage where it is not curable. If the cancer is detected at an early stage it can be cured.
If the cancer is localised to liver and has not spread outside liver and if it is possible to remove part of liver containing cancer (liver cancer) or if the whole liver can be replaced with a new liver (liver transplant ) then there is a possibility to cure the cancer.
Other than surgery is there any other treatment of liver cancer?
The best possible chance of survival in patient with primary liver cancer is after a successful surgery or liver transplant. If cancer can not be removed due to any reason, then the treatment goal is to prolong survival as much as possible and to keep patient comfortable. In expert centres these patients are treated with help of multiple interventions. New therapies like – TACE (trans arterial chemo embolization), TARE ( trans arterial radio embolization) , chemo therapy.
There are new and advanced radiotherapy techniques are also available like –
Calypso® 4D Localization System, TomoTherapy , CyberKnife, , external beam radio therapy (ERBT), intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT)
