Our Orthopaedic team has sub-specialised neuro-spinal surgeons that have decades of experience treating spinal fractures.
What is a spinal fracture?
Spinal fractures refer to broken bones or a fracture that has occurred anywhere along the spine. It can occur when more pressure is exerted on the bone causing it to break. The common types of spinal fractures include vertebral body compression fracture, flexion-distraction fractures, and burst fractures.
Spinal fractures signs & symptoms
The symptoms of spinal fractures vary depending on the location and severity of the injury. The common symptoms include:
- Pain in the back or neck
- Numbness and tingling in the arms or legs
- Muscle spasms
- Weakness or paralysis of the muscles
- Bowel or bladder changes
Spinal fractures common causes
The most common causes of spinal fractures include injuries due to vehicular accidents and falls.
Some other causes of spinal fractures include:
- Indulging in sports and recreational activities without wearing appropriate safety gears
- Acts of violence
- Pre-existing diseases such as osteoporosis or spine tumors
- Degenerative diseases affecting the spine
Treatments / Surgical options
Medications such as pain relievers may be prescribed depending on the specific symptoms. Surgical intervention is often needed to realign the bones.
The surgical treatment of spinal fractures involves the stabilization of the bones to prevent further injury.
Braces and orthotics may be needed to maintain spinal alignment and immobilize the spine during healing. It can also help to reduce pain by restricting movements.
Most patients with stable spinal fractures require only stabilization with braces while those with unstable neck fractures and dislocations may need traction to realign the spine.
Surgical procedures like instrumentation and fusion are recommended for the management of unstable fractures. Fusion refers to the joining of 2 vertebrae using a bone graft held together with the help of plates, hooks, rods, or pedicle screws.
The goal of bone grafts is to join the fractured vertebrae below and above to form a solid piece of bone.
Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are the minimally invasive procedures suitable for the management of compression fractures caused due to osteoporosis and spinal tumors.
