Body Contouring with Liposuction
Liposuction also known as lipoplasty, lipectomy or simply ‘lipo’ is a minimally invasive cosmetic surgery procedure that slims, reshapes, and contours specific body areas by removing excess fatty cells and improving the body contour and proportions.
How Liposuction Works
Liposuction is used to remove excess fat deposits from areas of the body that do not seem to respond to exercise and diet.
When you gain weight, the fat cells in your body increase in size and volume. Liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in a particular area. The amount of fat cells removed depends on the treatment area and the volume of fat. Following liposuction, the skin moulds itself to the new contours of the treated area.
Target Areas for Liposuction
Liposuction can be used to treat virtually anywhere in the body. Some of the most common target areas that it treats are:
- Neck
- Cheeks
- Chin
- Upper arms
- Chest area
- Abdomen
- Waist and flanks
- Hips
- Buttocks
- Thighs
- Calves
- Ankles
Liposuction is also used to treat gynecomastia or breast reduction.
It should however be noted that liposuction is not a weight loss treatment or a substitute for proper exercise and diet. That is why before undergoing liposuction you have to be near or at your ideal body weight. Liposuction also does not treat cellulite dimpling, stretch marks or other skin surface irregularities.
Liposuction on the hand can be used either alone or in conjunction with other plastic surgery procedures such as breast reduction, tummy tuck or facelift.
Good Candidate for Liposuction
An ideal candidate for liposuction should be:
- Physically and mentally healthy
- Be within 30% of your ideal weight
- Have firm, elastic skin as well as good muscle tone
- Have stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to diet or exercise
- Non smoker
- Be realistic about the outcome of the procedure
Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon for Liposuction
A successful liposuction procedure depends entirely on the right breast augmentation surgeon in Dubai. The surgeon you are going to choose should be a board-certified plastic surgeon, should have ample experience in breast surgeries, and should be associated with one of the best aesthetic surgery clinics in Dubai. The top characteristics of a good plastic surgeon include;
- He/she should have good reviews about previous work from the previous candidates.
- He/she should be able to show you his previous work through photographs or other data
- He/she prioritizes patient care and safety
- He/she has a keen artistic eye and aesthetic sense
Liposuction Procedure
There are different types of liposuction techniques and your Plastic Surgeon will select the most appropriate for you based on the treatment area, your treatment goals and if you’ve had other liposuction treatments in the past.
The liposuction techniques include:
- Tumescent liposuction
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL)
- Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL)
- Power-assisted liposuction (PAL)
Liposuction is done on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia, general anaesthesia or intravenous sedation.
Your Plastic Surgeon will make small inconspicuous incisions in the treatment area. He/she will first inject diluted local anaesthesia to the treatment area to minimize bleeding and trauma. A cannula or a thin hollow tube will be inserted through the incisions. It will be moved in a back and forth motion to loosen the excess fat. The displaced fat is then suctioned out of the target treatment area using surgical vacuum or cannula.
Recovery and Results
Following your liposuction procedure, your treatment area will be covered in elastic bandages or you may be advised to wear a compression garment for a period of time. These help in controlling the swelling, and compress the skin to the new body contours.
Small temporary drainage tubes may be placed in the incisions to collect any excess blood or fluid. You will experience swelling and discomfort during the recovery period but these will fade away with time. You will also be given specific instructions to follow by your Plastic Surgeon and it is important to follow them as they play a role in your results.
It’ll take several months for the swelling to dissipate fully and for your final results of your new contours to be visible. The results are long-lasting as long as you stick to a healthy diet and exercise on a regular basis.
NOTE: All results vary from one patient to the next

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that aims at reducing or getting rid of excess fat tissue from different areas of the body through suction with a tube called a cannula.
Liposuction permanently removes the fat cells from the area of the treatment. However, the fat cells that remain after the procedure can grow fat if you don’t maintain a healthy lifestyle and eating habits. Also, other areas that were not treated with liposuction can also get bigger with weight gain.
The amount of fat removed through liposuction is dependent highly on how much fat the patient has, the target area, as well as the overall well-being of the patient. On average, the maximum fat to be removed can average 6 liters, although there are plastic surgeons who claim they can remove up to 9 liters. However, experts say that removing a higher volume of fat can increase the risk of serious complications for the patient.
Most people confuse liposuction with weight loss. The liposuction procedure is used to remove excess pockets of fat as a way of contouring different body areas. This means you can use liposuction to get rid of bulges that occur as a result of fat formation in that area. However, liposuction can be the first step towards weight loss, because as the results of a more contoured body appear, you will be motivated to maintain or make the results better through following a healthy lifestyle, which is diet and exercise.
The cost of liposuction is dependent on a number of factors, which includes the area of fat removal, the size of the patient and the size of the area, the qualifications and expertise of the plastic surgeon, and the location where the aesthetic clinic. On average, liposuction costs can be between USD 4000 and USD 8000.
Just like any other surgical procedure, liposuction comes with its own risks which include the patient reacting to anesthesia, bleeding, and swelling. Other risks include contour irregularities, lack of symmetry, lumpy skin, and poor elasticity of the skin which leads to sagginess.
