What Is an Adjustable Gastric Band?

Adjustable gastric banding is considered the least invasive weight-loss surgery. This procedure involves placing a small inflatable silicone band around the top of the stomach, creating two compartments, with the smaller one at the top, reducing significantly the amount of food your stomach can hold.

The Gastric Band procedure is also part of our Weight Loss & Bariatric Programme, that includes an optional 6 month support package post surgery, to ensure you have the best opportunity to reach your weight loss goals.

Why Is the Surgery Done?

The gastric band will help you losing weight by restricting the amount of food you can eat. Usually, this procedure provides a temporary opportunity to lose weight, while you also implement healthy eating habits and exercise.

Who Is the Surgery Recommended For?

The gastric band procedure is mostly recommended for you if you have morbid obesity or want a temporary weight loss option to combine with lifestyle habit changes. In any case, your doctor might decide if the procedure is beneficial for you or not. The following conditions are required to qualify for the procedure:

  • BMI between 30 and 40.
  • Obesity-associated serious health problems.
  • No history of gastrointestinal diseases, drug or alcohol abuse.
  • Commit to healthy lifestyle changes.

Benefits and Potential Results

Gastric banding can be a very effective way to lose weight, depending on how much you change your lifestyle habits. By using this method, the average weight loss is around 30 to 60% of your excess weight over a six months period.

The following health conditions can also be improved as a result:

  • Diabetes.
  • Hypertension.
  • Hyperlipidemia.
  • Heart diseases.
  • Sleep apnea.
  • Osteoarticular diseases.

Risks

Adjustable gastric banding is a safe procedure with a minimal rate of complication. Some of the complications include infection of the band or port and vomiting. The most serious complication associated is the erosion of the band, but this is extremely rare.

Before Surgery

In order to be selected as a valid candidate for the procedure, your doctor might require some lab tests. The night before the procedure, you are not allowed to consume any food or liquid after midnight.

During Surgery

Adjustable gastric banding is a minimally-invasive procedure done by a Bariatric doctor. The procedure involves the following steps:

  • A small, inflatable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach through a tiny incision in your abdomen.
  • The band is connected through a small tube placed under the skin.
  • The band is filled with saline, that can be removed or added as needed through the small tube.

During the procedure, you will be sleeping under general anesthesia and monitored closely for any complication. The whole procedure will take about one hour.

After Surgery

Immediately after the procedure, you won’t be allowed to eat or drink for about 8 hours. After that, your diet will be gradually changing over liquid to solid and the amount of food will be changing as well. Most people go home within the same day and it takes about 1 week to fully recover at home and return to work.

Finally, you will need some follow-up in order to adjust the band after surgery and ensure optimal weight loss.

Gastric banding itself is a procedure that involves surgically inserting a customizable gastric band to aid in weight loss in people who are obese. It entails wrapping a silicone band known as the Lap-Band around your stomach, which shrinks it without permanently dividing it. This tends to slow food’s movement and limit the amount of food you can consume.

In the first year after your gastric band procedure, you will need to see your surgeon about 3 to 5 times for tweaks. Following that, twice-yearly visits to remove or add saline fluid to the band will be regular, though they may differ from one person to another. These adjustments are required to help you achieve the best possible degree of control and ensure that the band is working to its full potential.

If you feel hungry after eating the recommended amount of food, and you are still able to consume large portions, your gastric band may need to be tightened to function more effectively. Also, if you have trouble swallowing food, have reflux or heartburn, are constantly coughing or wheezing, or have emesis, this could be a sign that your gastric band is too rigid and should be adjusted to a considerable variation.

The average reduction in weight after gastric band surgery is 40%–50% of the body’s excess weight. You lose 1-2 pounds per week after the procedure, totaling 25–50 pounds in 6 months. It is typically slower but safer than most invasive bariatric surgeries.

The gastric band is intended to remain for an extended period, but its permanence has yet to be ascertained. The band is crafted of silicone and designed to avoid erosion, which happens when the band grinds against your stomach, resulting in a hole in the band and your stomach. Although gastric bands are perfectly safe, and there is no evidence that silicon will implode, having a band around your stomach for 30 years or more is not.

The stomach undergoes no long-term changes, implying that it will revert to its natural size.  This does not rule out the possibility of regaining weight. If you want the band removed after attaining your weight loss goals and staying at your lower BMI, you must adhere to a healthy diet and lifestyle.
