With aging comes the natural loss of the subcutaneous fat and breakdown of connective fibers such as collagen and elastin in the face. This leads to the facial muscles working closer to the skin resulting in the crow’s feet and smile lines becoming more apparent. There is also loss of facial volume as the skin also tends to stretch a bit. Dermal fillers can plump up, add fullness or volume, and smooth your skin mimicking its original structure.
But what are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that help to diminish fine lines and wrinkles, restore volume and fullness when injected underneath the skin.
Target Areas for Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are great when it comes to tackling the early signs of aging or they can also be used as part of facial rejuvenation surgery.
Dermal fillers are used to do the following:
- Enhance shallow contours
- Plump up thin lips
- Plump up the cheeks
- Contour and add volume to the chin
- Soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Improve facial symmetry
- Minimize or diminish the shadow of the lower eye lids
- Improve facial contours
- Treat wrinkles on the lower neck and around the chest area
- Improves the appearance of scars
Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers
The ideal candidate for dermal fillers is a generally healthy person who does not smoke, has realistic expectations regarding the treatment, is committed to maintaining good skin health, and has any or a number of the above-mentioned issues.
Types of Dermal Fillers
There are different types of dermal fillers and each works differently depending on where and what it’s treating.
Hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally produced by the skin and it is the most common type of dermal filler used. It is a gel-like filler and its results can last between 6-12 months. Brand names include Restylane, Belotero, and Juvéderm.
Calcium hydroxylapatite: This is mineral-like compound that is found in the bones. It is a gel-like substance which is vegan-friendly as it does not require animal products to be created. When injected, it has a lifespan of 9-15 months. Brand names include Radiesse.
Poly-L-Lactic acid: This is a natural collagen stimulator and dissolves within a day or two once injected in the skin. It is a non-toxic, biodegradable substance with the brand name Sculptra.
Polymethyl- methacrylate-microspheres (PMMA): This type of dermal filler is comprised of microspheres that are tiny, synthetic balls that once injected underneath the skin they give structure in deep wrinkles or plump up thin lips. It is a long-lasting dermal filler with the brand name Bellafill.
Fat grafting: Also known as autologous fat injections, it involves harvesting fat from your body through liposuction, processing it, and finally injecting it into the treatment area. This type of filler is considered as a long-term solution to volume loss.
Side Effects of Fillers
The side effects of fillers are minimal and can be quite easy to manage. They include:
- Bruising
- Itching
- Swelling
- Pain and discomfort following the treatment
Although dermal fillers are low risk treatments to slow down the aging process, it is important to work with a licensed provider, dermatologist, or a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon in order to achieve your desired optimal results.

Also known as a liquid facelift or instant facelift, facelift with filler is a non-surgical procedure that uses FDA-approved dermal fillers to add volume to the face, hence lifting it. Facelift fillers are usually used in face areas where volume has been depleted and the skin starts to sag due to loss of elasticity as a result of aging or weight loss.
The liquid face lift is a very short procedure that takes about 30 minutes to complete. But if you want to have a topical numbing cream, like EMLA, then the total time might increase to either 45 minutes to one hour.
Immediately after the procedure, you will have some degree of redness, bruising, and discomfort which can last for up to three days before disappearing. The bruising can easily be hidden with makeup until it disappears.
The instant filler facelift is usually charged depending on the amount of filler used, the expertise of the plastic surgeon, and the location. On average, you may need 3-4ml and the average price would be USD 3000 but may be less in some places.
The instant face lift procedure is considered virtually painless. This is because a numbing cream is applied to the target area 20 minutes before the procedure. Additionally, the filler comes with a numbing agent. A few hours after the procedure though, you may feel some degree of discomfort, at which you can take over-the-counter painkillers.
Most facelifts with filler results last up to 12 months or even more. However, depending on the type of dermal filler used and its consistency, it can last from a few months to a few years.
