The Rezum procedure, also known as Rezum Water Vapor Therapy, is a minimally invasive non-surgical technique that uses the natural energy stored in water vapor to remove excess prostate tissue that may be pressing on the urethra.
Ideal Candidate for Rezum Procedure
- Men who have chosen to stop taking Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) medication or who have chosen not to take them
- Men who haven’t responded to alternative non-surgical or less invasive BPH treatments
- Men who have indicated they aren’t bothered enough by their symptoms to elect an invasive surgical procedure
Symptoms Treated with Rezum Water Vapor Therapy
Rezum procedure is used to remove excess prostate tissue that press against the urethra causing symptoms that include:
- Frequency in urination
- Urgency of urinating
- Uneven urine flow
- Weak urine stream
- Straining while passing urine
- Getting up at night to urinate
The Rezum Water Vapor Procedure
The Rezum procedure, which is done on an outpatient basis in the urologist’s office or in an out-patient department of a hospital, radio-frequency energy is applied to a few drops of water inside a handheld device to create vapor (steam). The water vapor is then injected into the prostate tissue that is preventing urine from leaving the bladder. It then quickly converts back to water, releasing the energy held in the vapor into the cell membranes.
Depending on the number of treatment sessions recommended by the urologist, which is dependent on the size of the prostate, the Rezum-treated tissues are destroyed, which results in death of the affected cells. The patient’s body natural healing process will then absorb the treated tissue over time, which as a result shrinks the prostate, allowing the urethra to open and alleviate the BPH symptoms experienced.
Each Rezum treatment session can take as little as 10 seconds, and the patient will start to see his symptoms relieved from at least two weeks post-treatment, and full relief after at least three months.
*Results of the Rezum procedure vary from one patient to the next
Possible Risks of Rezum Procedure
Just like any other medical procedure, the Rezum water vapor therapy procedure also comes with its potential risks which may include:
- Urinary tract infection
- Painful or frequent urination
- Decrease in ejaculatory volume
- Inability to urinate
- Inability to ejaculate
- Urgent need to urinate
Effectiveness of the Rezum Water Vapour Procedure
Rezum procedure is considered highly effective for treating Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) symptoms because the heat energy is limited inside the prostate’s zonal boundaries, which causes necrosis (death of cells) in targeted cell tissue while protecting non-treated tissue around the area.
