Dr Ritu Khare has been practicing at various hospitals in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, since the past 18 years, focusing on surgical issues in women.

She specializes in minimal access surgery or laparoscopic surgery. She is an expert in abdominal wall hernia repairs and reconstruction of the abdominal wall. One of her main areas of focus has been addressing ventral hernia in multiparous women with a loose abdominal wall. Complex cases of large abdominal wall defects and recurrent hernia have also been her niche.

She has a special interest and is well known for her expertise in pancreatobiliary surgery. She has performed a large number of surgeries for chronic pancreatitis in the region. She has been trained at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute in India, which is one of the centres of excellence in complex hepatobiliary procedures, including chronic pancreatitis and bile duct injuries. She has used her experience to treat and operate similar cases in the UAE.

Dr Khare was adjudged as the “Young Surgeon of the year” finalist at the Arab Health Awards in the year 2012. Since the last 15 years, she has been actively involved in breast oncology, and has been committed to raising awareness for women’s health issues including breast cancer through various social forums. She is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and has been working as part of a multidisciplinary team in the treatment of breast cancer, helping many survivors to live long and happy lives.

Colorectal disorders are another aspect of women’s health that is often ignored and delayed, partly due to conservative patients seeking female surgeons. Dr Khare is a Fellow of the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons and has been a visiting consultant to the Division of Colorectal Surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital and Weil Cornell Medical Centre, New York. She treats patients with colon and rectal cancers, benign colorectal disorders such as diverticulitis, complex perianal fistulas and pilonidal sinus. She is trained in the minimally invasive management of different kinds of proctological and pelvic floor disorders.  She also has a large experience in the surgical management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis who need laparoscopic bowel surgery. She has one of the largest series of rectovaginal fistula repairs in the region, this being a serious and debilitating problem encountered in women.

Her expertise also extends to Bariatric surgery. She has trained at the Institute of Laparoscopic Surgery, Bordeaux, France and in the United States. She has special interests in patients on follow up after bariatric and metabolic surgery with regard to nutrition and management of postoperative surgical issues. Our region has a high prevalence of obese individuals undergoing bariatric surgery, leading to a variety of post-operative problems such as troublesome acid reflux, stomal ulcers, dumping syndrome, malabsorption, and internal hernias. Dr Khare has been collaborating with gastroenterologists, dieticians, and other related professionals to optimize long-term care for patients with such sequalae and complications.

Dr Khare brings her vast experience in gastrointestinal, colorectal and breast surgery to King’s College Hospital and will be an asset to women seeking surgical treatment.
