Prof Dhawan is a UK-trained distinguished Professor of Paediatric Hepatology and the Director of the King’s Cell Therapy Unit. He also leads the Paediatric Liver, Gastroenterology, Nutrition, and Mowat Labs departments at King’s College Hospital, London.
An internationally renowned expert, Professor Dhawan holds influential board-level positions with the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, the International Liver Transplantation Society, and the Cell Transplantation Society. He completed his bachelor’s and MD in pediatrics before moving to the UK for his higher studies. He has also held appointments in both the USA and the UK.
His primary research interest lies in liver cell transplantation. His lab achieved a historic first in the UK, with successful human liver cell transplants for liver-based metabolic disorders, and the first in the world to use human hepatocytes in alginate beads to treat acute liver failure in children.
His additional research focuses include outcomes of liver transplantation in children, immunosuppression, metabolic liver disease, and acute liver failure. He has published over 400 research papers and edited four books on paediatric hepatology and human hepatocyte transplantation. With a research H-index of 79 and over 24,000 citations, his work is funded by the Department of Health, NIHR, EU’s FP7, NIH, MRC, and several medical charities. Professor Dhawan is also a past president of the Cell Transplant and Regenerative Medicine Society.
