Living with Endometriosis? Why the Right Team Matters
“It’s just bad period pain.”
Unfortunately, this is something many women living with endometriosis hear for years before they finally receive a diagnosis. Endometriosis is often a misunderstood condition that can affect many aspects of a woman’s health and quality of life.
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the womb (uterus) is found elsewhere in the body. Endometriosis is commonly found in the pelvis, the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, and bladder. It can also occur in abdominal wall scars and, in rare cases, it may develop in other areas such as the chest.
Symptoms vary from person to person and may include:
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Painful or heavy menstrual periods
- Pain during intercourse
- Bowel and bladder symptoms
- Difficulty becoming pregnant.
- Fatigue
Women with bowel symptoms may undergo repeated investigations including colonoscopy, which is often normal, only to be told that their symptoms are due to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or that “it is all in their head.”
Similarly, some women experience repeated urine infections which are related to inflammation associated with endometriosis.
Many women struggle to become pregnant and may experience unsuccessful IVF cycles. It is estimated that 25%-50% of women experiencing infertility have endometriosis, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate specialist care.
Why the Right Team matters
Diagnosis of endometriosis is the key to ensure women receive the right management. Unfortunately, many women undergo multiple surgeries for endometriosis, which can have a detrimental effect on their ovaries. Accurate diagnosis and management by the right expert team is crucial in improving quality of life and helping women to achieve their dream of motherhood.
