What is a Migraine?
Migraines can cause sever, debilitating throbbing pain, or a pulsing sensation typically on one side of the head. It might be accompanied by extreme sensitivity to light and sound, as well as nausea and vomiting.
Migraine attacks vary in length and can leave you experiencing significant pain for a hour or even days.
Migraine symptoms
A migraine may progress through 4 stages, each with it’s own set of symptoms
- Prodrome
- Aura
- Headache
- Post-drome
Prodrome
You may notice the following 1-2 days before the onset of a migraine:
- Constipation
- Food cravings
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination
- Mood swings
- Neck stiffness
- Frequent yawning
Aura
Although most people experience migraines without aura, it may occur before or during a migraine and it characterized by a visual disturbance. More symptoms include:
- Seeing various shapes, flashed of light, spots
- Vision loss
- Pins and needles in an arm or leg
- Weakness or numbness in a limb, face, or side of the body
- Difficulty speaking
- Hearing noises or music
- Uncontrollable jerking
Headache
A migraine can last anywhere between 4 hours to 3 days. The associated headaches vary in intensity and frequency between people. You may experience:
- Throbbing or pulsing pain
- Pain on one side or both sides of your head
- Sensitivity to light and sounds
- Nausea and vomiting
- Blurred vision
- Light-headedness and fainting
Post-drome
This is the final phase of a migraine attack and your mood may be anything from feeling elated to feeling completely drained. You may also feel:
- Confused
- Moodiness
- Dizziness
- Weak
