Revision Rhinoplasty in Dubai

Revision rhinoplasty, also known as secondary rhinoplasty, is a procedure that seeks to correct a previous nose surgery, also known as a primary rhinoplasty. The goal of the procedure, which is available at the King’s Advanced Rhinoplasty Clinic, is to enhance or restore both functional and aesthetic aspects of the nose.

A rhinoplasty procedure, also known as a nose job, is considered one of the most difficult aesthetic procedures because of the complexity of the nose’s structure, which includes cartilage, bone and skin.

The Need for Revision Rhinoplasty

The need for a corrective rhinoplasty or revision rhinoplasty, can be driven by a number of factors including:

  • Poor healing after the primary rhinoplasty
  • Undesirable results after the first nose surgery
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Asymmetry of the nose after healing
  • Misshapen nostrils
  • Persistent bumps on the nasal bridge
  • Injury to the nose
  • Abnormalities of the nasal tip
  • Deviated septum
  • Crooked nose
  • Unnatural appearance of the nose
  • Exposed or displaced nasal implants

Ideal Candidate for Revision Rhinoplasty

A good candidate for a corrective rhinoplasty procedure is one who is:

  • Dissatisfied with the results of their primary nose job
  • Experiencing functional concerns like breathing difficulties after a nose surgery
  • It’s been at least one year since the first nose job
  • In good health both physically and psychologically
  • Has realistic expectations
  • Has no underlying medical conditions

How to Choose a Revision Rhinoplasty Surgeon

Having a successful revision rhinoplasty procedure depends highly on choosing the right facial plastic surgeon who’s experienced and is an expert in revision rhinoplasty. He/she should also be an expert in facial contouring procedures. Other factors you should consider include:

  • The revision rhinoplasty surgeon should not only be experienced but should be board-certified as well.
  • He/she should be able to re-balance the nose with the rest of the facial features by creating facial symmetry
  • The number of secondary rhinoplasty procedures performed
  • He should have great reviews from his/her previous patients
  • He should be able to show his before and after images of previous revision rhinoplasty procedures performed by him.

Pre-Op Guidelines

After a detailed consultation with the facial plastic surgeon or revision rhinoplasty expert, and the patient has decided to go ahead with the procedure, he/she must follow some guidelines before the actual surgery. These include:

  • Applying lotions, creams, or serums to your face is not recommended
  • Staying nil-by-mouth from midnight the day before the revision rhinoplasty. Any food in the stomach might create a risk of aspiration.
  • Refraining from drinking alcohol and smoking at least 24 hours before and 48 hours after the revision nose job.
  • You may be required to stop some medications and supplements including blood thinners, blood pressure medication, and some herbal supplements.

Revision Rhinoplasty Procedure

Secondary rhinoplasty is done under general anesthesia and depending on how complex the procedure is, it can take up to 3 hours.

During the procedure, incisions are usually made where the original nose job incisions were made so as to avoid any additional scars. The revision procedure can be performed either open or closed. Open revision nose job requires a small incision between the base of the nostrils whereby the skin is pulled up, while closed rhinoplasty is performed from inside the nostrils. Cartilage, bone or skin is either removed or reshaped to achieve an optimal outcome that is determined by the need of the procedure.

Immediately after the procedure, a nasal splint is usually placed in order to protect the nose in the initial stage of healing, and to keep the nose contoured. In most revision rhinoplasty cases, the patient can go home on the same day, making it a day case procedure.

Recovery After Revision Nose Job

The moment you leave the operating room, your recovery commences. You may experience pain, nausea, and nasal congestion when you wake up. This should not be a cause for concern.

The doctor may prescribe antibiotics, anti-nausea medication, and maybe supplements to treat the side effects of the procedure, according to your body’s specific requirements.
