Specialist Centre for Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EoE)
Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, immune-mediated condition that causes inflammation of the oesophagus due to an overactive immune response to certain food allergens. Left untreated, EoE can lead to persistent symptoms and long-term complications such as oesophageal narrowing (strictures) and difficulty swallowing.
At King’s College Hospital Dubai, we are proud to be the first dedicated EoE centre in the UAE, offering precision-based diagnostic and treatment approaches tailored to each patient’s unique needs. We are also the first centre to use EndoFLIP dynamic studies to differentiate different stages of EoE for more precise treatment and streamlined follow up.
Signs and Symptoms of EoE
EoE symptoms can vary by age and severity, but common signs include:
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) – Feeling like food is stuck in the throat or oesophagus.
- Food impaction – Food getting lodged in the oesophagus, sometimes requiring medical intervention.
- Persistent heartburn or acid reflux – Symptoms that do not improve with standard acid-reducing medications.
- Chest discomfort or pain – Often mistaken for heartburn or acid reflux.
- Chronic cough or throat clearing – Especially after eating.
- Poor appetite or feeding difficulties (in children) – Leading to nutritional concerns and poor weight gain.
Early diagnosis and management are key to preventing complications such as oesophageal strictures (narrowing of the oesophagus) that may require medical intervention.
Advanced EoE Diagnostic Testing
Accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. At King’s College Hospital Dubai, our specialists use state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques, including:
- Endoscopic Biopsy – A minimally invasive procedure where a small tissue sample is taken from the oesophagus to check for eosinophilic inflammation.
- Allergy Testing – Identifying food and environmental triggers that may be contributing to the condition.
- Oesophageal Manometry & pH Testing – Assessing oesophageal function and acid levels to differentiate EoE from other conditions.
Personalised EoE Treatment Approaches at King’s
EoE is a chronic condition that requires a multidisciplinary approach, combining gastroenterology, allergy, and nutrition expertise. Our treatment options include:
Dietary Elimination Therapy: Many cases of EoE are triggered by food allergies. Our specialists offer:
- Targeted Elimination Diets – Removing specific food allergens based on test results.
- Empirical Six-Food Elimination Diet – A structured approach that eliminates the most common EoE triggers (dairy, wheat, eggs, soy, nuts, and seafood).
- Reintroduction and Monitoring – Gradually reintroducing foods to identify individual triggers.
Topical Corticosteroids: Medications such as swallowed corticosteroids can reduce inflammation and prevent oesophageal damage, improving symptoms without significant systemic side effects.
Endoscopic Dilation: For patients with severe narrowing of the oesophagus, endoscopic dilation can help widen the oesophagus, improving swallowing and reducing food impaction.
Long-term Management & Follow-up: As EoE is a chronic condition, our team provides ongoing monitoring and personalised care plans to ensure long-term symptom control and quality of life.
