Rapid recovery is an approach that starts preparing you for recovery before your operation and continues through surgery and rehabilitation. The aim is to help you get moving safely and return to everyday activities as soon as your recovery allows.
Patients are generally encouraged to start moving soon after surgery, with support from the clinical and physical therapy teams. Exactly when and how much you can walk will depend on your procedure and individual recovery.
Recovery involves more than the surgery itself. Good pain management, early movement, physical therapy, nutrition, and following your rehabilitation plan all play a part. Preparing for surgery beforehand can also help make the recovery process smoother.
Your orthopedic surgeon will consider your overall health, mobility, the joint being replaced, and any other medical conditions when planning your care. Your recovery pathway is then tailored around your individual needs and the type of surgery you are having.
