Fatty liver disease in children, also known as paediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is a condition where excess fat builds up in the liver of children. This condition is becoming increasingly common, largely due to the rising rates of childhood obesity and unhealthy dietary habits.
Fatty liver disease starts with accumulation of excess fat in the liver, which over time may lead to inflammation and damage of liver tissue. If not treated in time, this may progress to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and even liver failure. Therefore, it is imperative to diagnose and treat childhood fatty liver disease early to avoid irreversible changes in the liver.
Risk factors for paediatric NAFLD include obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and certain genetic factors. Lifestyle factors such as a sedentary lifestyle and a diet high in processed foods, sugars, and unhealthy fats also contribute to the development of the disease.
