King’s College Hospital London is the first Hospital in the United Arab Emirates to have the advanced EOS Imaging system. Both fast and painless, EOS represents a significant advancement in orthopedic imaging. It improves your surgery outcome by providing surgeons with accurate data using much lower radiation doses than X-ray and CT scans.
What is EOS?
EOS® is a dedicated system that specifically addresses the unique needs of the orthopaedic industry. The EOS system simultaneously captures full-body, frontal and lateral images. The X-rays are weight bearing (done in an upright standing or sitting position) giving the doctors a global assessment of their patient in a functional position.
Low dose EOS exams provide accurate 2D images and valuable anatomical 3D information. The Micro Dose option further reduces radiation exposure without compromising the ability to generate 3D models.
Using Micro Dose for follow-up paediatric exams is another important step towards the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) and is particularly important for patients with conditions that require frequent scans over the course of the their treatment.
Benefits of the EOS System
1. Dose reduction
The EOS system delivers 50% to 85% less radiation than X-ray systems.
Substituting certain CT exams with an EOS exam reduces the patient radiation dose by 95%.
Micro Dose protocol for a full spine exam (one from the front and one from the side) is at a dose that’s equivalent to only a week’s worth of natural background radiation.
2. High quality images in a weight-bearing position
Most imaging technologies capture images while you are lying down. With EOS, you will be standing or sitting during your exam.
By capturing exams in an upright, weight-bearing position physicians can better evaluate your posture and understand the relationship between your spine, pelvis and lower limbs as well as the compensatory mechanisms of the lower limbs.
3. Improved outcomes
Ability to visualise and understand the position, rotation and orientation of the bones in 3D with the entire skeletal system from a weight-bearing position.
Improved diagnosis with over 100+ automatically calculated, accurate 2D and 3D measurements that are free from bias and taken in a functional position.
Perform post-operative assessment of hip and knee replacements through a dedicated and precise workflow that automatically calculates the position of the prosthetic components.
Visualise 3D models and calculate 2D/3D parame-ters even from pediatric Micro Dose exams and seated exams with a specialised EOS chair.
Frequently Asked Questions
IS EOS IMAGING SAFE? SAFE SCANS BRIGHT FUTURE
Yes. EOS is a radically new vision for orthopaedic imaging. With its characteristic blend of advanced imaging and a low dose of radiation, EOS opens the door to truly safe, satisfying and personalized orthopaedic care.
CAN I BRING A FRIEND OR RELATIVE WITH ME?
Yes. For children having a scan, a parent or guardian can be present in the room if required and safe to do so. Children will not be allowed in the EOS scan room whilst an adult is having a scan, arrangements will need to be made before your appointment.
DO I NEED AN INJECTION?
NO, for EOS no injection is required.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE THE EOS SCAN?
There is no preparation required for EOS examinations and you may continue to eat, drink and take your medication as normal.
Please contact us before your EOS appointment if you:
- Are, or think you may be, pregnant.
- Have a disability or special needs (for example – if you need wheelchair access, you are hard of hearing or have poor eyesight).
- Have any other questions or concerns.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY APPOINTMENT? EOS: IT ’S A BEAUTIFUL THING
During an EOS exam, you will be either sitting or stand-ing for localized or full-body images in a natural, weight-bearing position. No lying down, no turning over. The result; beautiful, information-packed images that allow your doctors to better understand and view interactions between the spine and lower limbs.
What’s more, EOS has the capability to model skeletal anatomy in 3D for even more precise measurements, clinical parameters and treatments.
EOS MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN DIAGNOSING, TREATING AND MONITORING ORTHOPAEDIC CONDITIONS
That’s why leading hospitals around the world include EOS in their Imaging suite.
- EOS is revolutionizing the planning and treatment of orthopaedic conditions.
- It’s delivering more precise measurements than standard X-ray technologies.
- It’s stress-free and fast: EOS scans take 20 seconds or less to complete.
- Most importantly, EOS uses a low dose of radiation.
WHEN WILL I GET THE RESULTS?
After your scan, some measurements will be performed on an advanced EOS workstation. It is therefore preferable to allow at least 24-48 hours before booking a follow-up appointment with your doctor.
