Liver Transplantation
Patients who are in need for a liver transplantation are thoroughly assessed by the liver team as well as multiple other specialists to determine their suitability for the transplant surgery. Transplant surgeries are performed by our highly competent surgeons who have a collective experience of performing more than 1500 liver transplant procedures. With our dedicated liver intensive care units managed by skilled intensivist care physicians, we aim to ensure a smooth post-operative recovery. Our proficient hepatologists and adept transplant coordinators then ensure optimal immunosuppression and patient recovery to normalcy.
Deceased Donor Liver Transplantation
Once patients are evaluated and deemed fit for a liver transplant, they are listed with the UAE regulatory authorities. We have a comprehensive multi-disciplinary program to optimize the clinical condition of patients while they are waiting for a suitable donor organ. Once deceased donor organs are allocated to us, our team is ready to perform the liver transplant procedure at any hour. We also have the capability to use external machine perfusion devices that are sometimes needed to assess viability of the donated organs.
Living donor liver transplantation
We offer living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) to patients with liver failure in need of an urgent liver transplant. This requires meticulous assessment of the living donor who can be a family member willing to donate a portion of his/her liver for a lifesaving liver transplant surgery. LDLT requires special surgical skills since it entails operating on healthy individuals and removing a portion of their liver and ensuring that the remnant portion continues to function adequately for the donor. Our surgical team has a huge experience in performing LDLTs. Fortunately, livers have an amazing capacity to regenerate, and such partial liver grafts grow to almost normal size within a few weeks.
Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery
Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery is done for benign and malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and bile ducts. HPB surgery is needed for treatment of conditions such as chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, gallbladder and bile duct cancer, and complex biliary strictures. These are among the most challenging and complex surgical procedures and require a high degree of expertise and skill. The King’s Liver Centre is one of the very centres in UAE that offers these surgeries using a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach that reduces complications and enhances patient recovery.
Interventional Radiology
We offer the entire range of interventional hepatobiliary interventions including ablation procedures for liver cancers (chemoembolization, radiofrequency, and microwave ablation), management of portal hypertension and bleeding varices (Trans-jugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts, radiological embolization), and management of complex biliary strictures (biliary drainage and stenting). Our interventional radiologists have specific expertise in management of post-transplant complications.
Intensive Liver Care
An extremely important component of care for patients who have severe liver diseases such as acute liver failure and end stage cirrhosis is intensive care in the critical care unit. Such patients must be stabilised in a meticulous manner taking care of all other organ functions till the damaged liver recovers or the patient undergoes a liver transplant. Our liver intensive care unit is managed by highly experienced intensive care physicians and nurses specifically trained in acute liver care and post-transplant care who take meticulous care of these very sick patients. Our liver intensive care unit also offers artificial liver dialysis and renal replacement therapy to patients who have advanced liver and renal failure.
