Neurosurgery is a branch of medicine that diagnoses and surgically treats conditions that are associated with the central and peripheral nervous system (the brain, spinal cord and column, and peripheral nerves). Doctors who specialize in this area are known as neurosurgeons and they use advanced surgical and non-surgical techniques to provide care to both adult and paediatric patients.
At King’s Neurosurgery Unit we have a multidisciplinary team of highly trained neurosurgeons who diagnose, treat, and manage an array of neurological conditions using the latest non-invasive, minimally invasive and open procedures/techniques in a calm and compassionate environment, where they help patients improve and regain their quality of life.
Our Team deals with 3 major branches:
- Brain Surgery – Including endoscopic and awake brain surgery
- Spine Surgery – Visit our dedicated Spine Centre
- Pediatric Neurosurgery – Including new born conditions
Conditions Treated in Neurosurgery
Neurosurgeons treat a number of conditions including:
- Stroke
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Tremors
- Tumours
- Spinal cord injuries and conditions
- Spinal stenosis
- Herniated disc
- Congenital disorders
- Vertebral fractures
- Trauma
- Intercranial pressure
- Cerebral aneurysm
- Trauma
- Carotid Artery stenosis
Neurosurgery Procedures
Neurosurgical procedures performed at the Neurosurgery centre include:
- Brain surgery: This includes procedures such as removal of brain tumours, brain trauma treatment, aneurysm repair, treatment of brain strokes, removal of clots, awake brain surgery and minimally invasive endoscopic brain surgery.
- Spine surgery: Assessment and treatment of adult and pediatric spinal disorders, including: open, mini-open and minimally invasive spine surgery, advanced image guided spinal surgery using neuronavigation and O-arm (3D), treatment for degenerative disc disease, disc herniation, spinal decompression, spinal fusion, spinal arthroplasty (replacement by artificial disc), spinal tumors, spinal infections, spinal deformity, spina bifida and related malformations (Chiari, basilar invagination), management of Bertolotti syndrome, percutaneous kyphoplasty for osteoporotic fractures, treatment of coccygeal pain, spinal biopsy, among others.
- Pediatric Neurosurgery – Including Hydrocephalus (SHUNT & Endoscopic treatment), Spina bifida, tethered cord, tumors & Chiari decompression (This is a procedure used to treat Arnold-Chiari malformation, a condition that leads to the inability to balance normally).
- Peripheral nerve surgery: The procedures involved include ulnar nerve release, carpal tunnel release, and vagus nerve stimulation.
- Epilepsy & Functional Neurosurgery: This is a procedure that is recommended for individuals who suffer from severe epileptic seizures whereby conservative methods of treatment like epilepsy medication are unable to offer relief.
- Brain and Spinal Trauma
Neuroscience Diagnostics
Our neurosurgeons use the latest equipment and techniques to help in diagnosing these disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system. Patients requiring neuroimaging are referred to the Radiology Department which provides a full range of specialised imaging modalities including CT scans, MR scans, ultrasound (US) and Angiography. Our Clinical Neurophysiology Service uses specialised machines to record the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscle functions.
Some of the major diagnostic procedures at the King’s Neurosciences Centre include:
- Electroencephalography (EEG)
- VEP (Visual Evoked Potentials)
- BAEPS: Brainstem Auditory evoked potentials.
- Video EEG monitoring
- Electromyography for diagnosis of different Muscle diseases (EMG)
- Polysomnography
- Nerve conduction velocity studies for Diagnosis of different nerve disorders (NCS).
- SSEP (Somatosensory evoked potentials)
- Lumbar puncture: Also known as a spinal tap, this is a procedure used for diagnosis a number of conditions that affect the central nervous system.
