The prostate is a small walnut-shaped gland in males, located below the urinary bladder and in front of the rectum, that produces the seminal fluid, which nourishes and transports sperm.
The three most common forms of prostate disease are prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), and prostate cancer. Prostate disease is very common in men over the age of 50 years. In fact, around 25% of men aged 55 years and over have a prostate condition. This increases to 50% in men over the age of 70 years. The most common forms of prostate disease in this age group are benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, which, although not life threatening, can significantly affect quality of life. Symptoms include obstruction in the flow of urine, increased frequency of urination, inability to delay urination and needing to pass urine at night.
Prostate Cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men. Most prostate cancers grow very slowly and remain confined to the prostate gland, however, few cancers are aggressive and spread early in the disease. If found before the cancer has metastasized, the 5 year survival rate is almost a 100%. Therefore, it is imperative to catch the disease early.
The risk of prostate cancer increases with age. Also, the risk may be higher if you have a blood relative, such as father or brother diagnosed with prostate cancer.
In early stages, prostate cancer is usually a-symptomatic. As the cancer advances, you can experience some of these symptoms.
- Difficulty urinating
- Decreased force in the stream of urine
- Blood in the urine or semen
- Erectile dysfunction
